High School Football Game of the Week comes to 1230 ESPN

 
 
 
(Bakersfield, CA)- After a successful multiple-decade-long run on sister station KERN Newstalk 1180, the High School Football Game of the Week is moving to 1230 ESPN beginning with the 2010 season.
     “We had a great opportunity to move these community-favorite broadcasts over to a local sports station and it was something we couldn’t pass up,” said Corey Costelloe, play-by-play voice and Program Director at 1230 ESPN. “KERN has been great over the years but the possibility of what we can do with these games on a sports format is tremendous.”
     1230 ESPN will start the season in true historic fashion, broadcasting two games in Week 0. The first will be the long-awaited cross-sectional matchup when Bakersfield High travels to Southern Section powerhouse Long Beach Poly on Thursday night September 2nd. 1230 ESPN will then carry a new valley rivalry between upstarts Clovis North and Independence the following night, Friday September 3rd.
     Other teams on the announced portion of the schedule include Garces, Highland, Tehachapi, Independence, Stockdale, Wasco, West, South, East and Bakersfield Christian. The first five weeks of the season have been scheduled with the remaining games to be announced at a later date.
     Costelloe will return to the broadcast booth for his 8th season calling the ‘Game of the Week.’ He’ll be joined by Michael Hopper returning for his second season providing color commentary.
     ESPN 1230 will also expand pre game coverage with an hour-long studio show. Beginning at 6pm fans will hear interviews, previews, predictions and updates from the all over the valley. Depending on start times, the pre game coverage will then shift to the broadcast booth on location at 7pm before a scheduled 7:30 kickoff.
